Gokarna is a temple town in the district of Uttara Kannada in the state of Karnataka. The cow has a special place in the hearts of the Hindus and it is believed by them that Lord Rudra which is the other name of Lord Shiva was sent to Patalloka by Lord Brahma, and was asked to do a penance. Then he came from the ear of Prithvi a cow which is the synonym for Mother Earth. Thus the entire region began to be known as Gokarna. The place also was the womb of Rudra and the so the place is also known by the name of Adi Gokarna, Rudra Yoni etc It is located at the place where the two rivers meet.
